My Irish Great Grandparents, Henry and Mary Mckegney, settled in the Blenheim area, after their arrival from County Tyrone in 1876. Henry’s brother Peter and sister Catherine with their spouses moved further South and settled in Christchurch.
Peter Mckegney and second wife Margaret had the following children.
1878 Twin boys they named Bernard and Peter. Peter later died at one years old.
In 1879 A second set of twins William and Catherine Susan, are born, sadly William later dies at three months of age. The electoral rolls state the family is living at First Street Sydenham and Peter is a labourer.
In 1881 Peter’s daughter Rosanna, born from his first marriage to Bridget Rodgers in Ireland, 1870, and who came to New Zealand aged five with her father and second wife dies aged ten.The story concerning her death was published in the Christchurch newspaper.
Also in 1881 a new baby daughter, they named Margaret was born, all the children were baptized in the Catholic Cathedral Christchurch which was recently destroyed in the big eathquakes.
